The Annual Company Law Conference was held on 09 November 2022 at the Aula Magna Hall at the University’s Valletta Campus. This highly anticipated conference is organized by the Chamber of Advocates through its academic foundation, the Malta Law Academy. The Hon. Mr Justice Ian Spiteri Bailey, currently responsible for deciding court cases dealing with company law issues, delivered the opening address to a packed hall.
The first part of the programme covered a variety of interesting topics such as insider dealing law in Malta, the fall-out from the FATF grey-listing, and company law developments between 2021 and 2022.
In the second part, the conference focused on company insolvency issues, practical difficulties that have been encountered and proposals for reforms. This is the first time that more than half the conference was dedicated to Insolvency, with 2 speakers delivering important points on the subject, followed by an interesting panel discussion between a group of notable legal professionals.
The engaging speaker line-up included: Dr David Fabri, Prof Andrew Muscat, Mr Marcel Cassar, Dr Tiziana Filletti and Dr Kevan Azzopardi. The panel discussion was moderated by Dr Ivan Vella with the participation of Dr Reuben Balzan, Dr Arthur Galea Salomone, Dr Conrad Portanier and Dr Ian Stafrace.
