Quarterly Law Seminar

The Chamber of Advocates and its academic arm, the Malta Law Academy, will be hosting German psychologist and legal scholar, Ms Alica Mohnert, who will deliver an interesting lecture entitled ‘The Psychological Way of Doing Law’.

“You probably think you know what you’re doing, but it’s likely you make errors of judgement every single day. Human thinking is based on effective heuristics enabling quick assessments without knowing all the facts. Heuristics are mental short-cuts to arrive at conclusions.  They work well enough for everyday decisions, but in the legal field, they can be detrimental to justice.”

Ms Mohnert will delve into:

• The typical heuristics and biases systematically skewing a lawyer’s view on the case;
• The demarcation lines between lies and truth; and
• How memory lapses lead to a lot of embellishments and story-telling when trying to establish the facts with clients.

The lecture will take place on Monday, 04 April 2022 at 1 pm, at the Chamber’s conference hall and through a Zoom webinar.

Bio: Ms Alica Mohnert is a German psychologist and legal scholar specialising in teaching psychological skills and knowledge to law students and professionals. She is a household name in the judiciary’s education programmes, has written the standard textbook on the topic in Germany (“Psychologie für Juristen”, published at Nomos in 2019) and was nominated twice for a teaching award. Her activities as an educational activist have resulted in the implementation of psychology into the law curriculum of the most populated German federal state.
