Chamber of Advocates Monthly Newsletter – May 2025

This is the Chamber of Advocates’ newsletter for the month of May 2025.

1. The Malta Law Academy (a foundation of the Chamber of Advocates) yesterday held its first employment law seminar which was well attended by various legal and HR professionals. The seminar was delivered by Dr Christine Calleja, Dr Matthew Brincat, Dr Paul Gonzi and Dr Edward Mizzi. Other seminars are being planned for this year, including some which have been proposed by the committee for inhouse legal.

2. The Chamber has issued a call for its members to form part of a sub-committee to be set up to study the proposed amendments to the institute of warrants in the code of organisation and civil procedure. A number of applications have already been received, and the call is still open. Anyone interested can send an email to [email protected]. Closing date is the 10th of June 2025.

3. The Chamber has also issued a call for its members to participate in the Chamber’s Civil Law Working Group in order to discuss the proposed reform of the Land Registry, as outlined by the Ministry for Lands. Closing date for applications is today, the 30th of May.

4. The Chamber of Advocates had selected newly graduated Martina Rizzo to participate in the Young European Lawyers Contest after a call for applications. The semifinals for this contest were held in Barcelona and were organised by the Academy of European Law in collaboration with Il lustre Collegi de l’Advocacia de Barcelona (ICAB). The team of which Martina formed part of has advanced to the final round of this contest, which will take place in Trier in Autumn. The legal issues discussed concerned the GDPR and the NIS2 Directive. The Chamber extends its sincere congratulations to Martina and wishes her every success in the final round.

5. The Chamber has also undertaken a project to modernise its legacy technical infrastructure which consists of overhauling its back-end technical systems to ensure less down time and better data security. The Chamber is collaborating with external contractors to complete this project by Q3 of this year. It is also preparing to improve and overhaul its front-end systems within Q4 of this year.

6. No further progress has been made regarding the tariffs which the Chamber has proposed to the Ministry for Justice.
